Online prescriptions, sometimes called online scripts or eScripts, allow you to discuss a prescription request with an Australian-registered doctor by video or phone. The doctor reviews your health information and decides whether prescribing through telehealth is clinically appropriate. If a prescription is issued, it can be provided electronically as an eScript. TelehealthDr uses real-time doctor-patient consultations rather than questionnaire-only prescribing for new online prescription requests.
Use the chooser above to select a new prescription, a repeat script, or a general consultation. If you're unsure which applies, the general consultation is the right starting point.
Before your consultation, you'll answer a few questions about your current health, symptoms, and any medications you're taking. This helps the doctor prepare and makes the consultation more efficient.
Your doctor will assess your situation by video or phone a real clinical conversation, not a form. They’ll ask questions, review your history, and decide whether a prescription is clinically appropriate for you.
If the doctor decides to prescribe, an eScript can be sent electronically by SMS or Email. You can present it to a pharmacy that supports electronic prescriptions. If prescribing is not appropriate, the doctor will explain why and recommend a suitable next step.
Telehealth can work well for some new and repeat prescription requests, but not every situation can be managed online. Suitability depends on your symptoms, health history, current medicines and whether the doctor can gather enough information remotely to make a safe clinical decision.
Telehealth may be suitable when
You want to discuss a repeat script for an existing medicine.
Your health needs can be assessed adequately by video or phone.
A physical examination is not required.
The doctor has enough relevant information to assess your request.
Your usual GP is unavailable and an online doctor is appropriate for the situation.
You may need in-person care when
Your symptoms are new, severe, complex or worsening.
A physical examination is needed.
Testing or regular monitoring may be required.
Your care is better managed by your usual GP or specialist.
The doctor cannot assess the issue safely through telehealth alone.
Doctors can assess both new and repeat prescription requests during a telehealth consultation. Whether prescribing is appropriate depends on your individual health needs, medical history, current medicines and whether enough information can be obtained remotely to make a safe clinical decision.
Some prescription requests may not be suitable for one-off telehealth prescribing because they require closer monitoring, additional testing, ongoing medical management or an in-person assessment. In these situations, your regular GP or specialist may be the most appropriate person to manage your care. Learn more in the Medical Board of Australia’s telehealth guidelines.
A telehealth appointment does not guarantee a prescription. If the doctor decides not to prescribe, they can explain why and recommend an appropriate next step, such as further testing, an in-person GP appointment or follow-up with your regular doctor or specialist.
If the doctor issues an electronic prescription, the eScript token can be sent to your mobile by SMS. Open the message and present the QR code or token to a pharmacy that supports electronic prescriptions.
Your electronic prescription may also be sent by Email. Open the secure token on your phone or another device and present it to the pharmacist when your prescription is dispensed.
Where supported, TelehealthDr may be able to send prescription information directly to a nominated pharmacy after your consultation. Ask the team if this option is available for your prescription.
A Medicare card is not the only way a patient can be identified for electronic prescribing. People with Medicare or DVA details generally already have an Individual Healthcare Identifier (IHI), and people without Medicare may be able to obtain an IHI through myGov.
A telehealth consultation for an online prescription at TelehealthDr starts from $49.99. This covers the doctor's consultation time; the cost of your medication is separate and paid at the pharmacy.

Telehealth can be appropriate for some prescription requests when a doctor can complete an adequate clinical assessment remotely. If a physical examination, testing, monitoring or another form of care is needed, the doctor may recommend an in-person appointment instead.
The Medical Board says practitioners should continuously assess whether telehealth remains appropriate.
