Diarrhea occurs when someone passes three or more loose stools in a day, with or without abdominal pain. Diarrhea or watery stools may occur with mild to severe symptoms. The usual signs and symptoms of diarrhea are nausea, headache, flatulence, loss of appetite, pain in the tummy, and fever. The person may also feel the urgency to go to the toilet again and again.
The most common causes of diarrhea are motion sickness (due to traveling) and infections which cause food poisoning or gastroenteritis. The other reasons can be sudden dietary changes, a specific food ingredient or product, excessive alcohol intake, or stress & anxiety.
Diarrhea leaves a person dehydrated and weak. Intake of oral rehydration salt (ORS) is recommended to balance the electrolyte loss. In severe cases, intravenous infusion of electrolytes is administered by a healthcare provider. Contact your doctor if the episodes of loose stools prolong to find out and treat the cause behind long-term diarrhea.

Certain viral and bacterial infections become the cause of diarrhea in the form of food poisoning, gastroenteritis, vomiting, and abdominal pain with fever. Other causes are dietary changes, food allergies, high alcohol intake, and stress.
Long-term conditions that become the reason for diarrhea are ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease, food intolerance, and some medications such as antibiotics and laxatives.
An episode of 3 loose stools for a day or two can go away on its own. But you should seek medical help if watery stools continue with tummy pain, fever, or vomiting. You should go immediately to the nearby hospital if there are signs of dehydration, bloody stool, and severe abdominal pain.
Drink oral rehydration salt and juices to balance fluid loss, avoid spicy and preserved food, avoid caffeine and alcohol intake, avoid undercooked food and insoluble fiber-containing foods, and take care of your personal hygiene.
