Can High Blood Pressure Be Managed Through Telehealth?

Some aspects of high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, can be reviewed through telehealth. This may include discussing home blood pressure readings, reviewing existing treatment, assessing lifestyle and cardiovascular risk factors, and considering whether further tests or medication review are appropriate.

Telehealth is not suitable for every situation. A doctor may recommend an in-person examination, pathology testing, an ECG, 24-hour blood pressure monitoring or ongoing care with your regular GP depending on your readings and medical history.

What Is Considered High Blood Pressure?

Blood pressure measures the force of blood against the walls of your arteries as your heart pumps blood around your body. It is recorded in millimetres of mercury (mmHg) using two numbers.

Systolic Blood Pressure

The upper number measures arterial pressure when the heart contracts and pumps blood.

Diastolic Blood Pressure

The lower number measures pressure when the heart relaxes between beats.

For example, a reading may be written as 120/80 mmHg.

A doctor may therefore use repeated readings, home blood pressure monitoring or 24-hour ambulatory monitoring when assessing possible hypertension.

How Blood Pressure Treatment Online Works

Book Your Consultation

Choose an available phone or video consultation and have any recent blood pressure readings ready if possible.

Speak With an Australian-Registered Doctor

Your doctor may review your readings, current medicines, medical history, family history, lifestyle and other health conditions that may affect your cardiovascular risk.

Discuss Your Management Plan

Depending on the assessment, the doctor may discuss blood pressure monitoring, lifestyle measures, existing medicines, treatment options, pathology testing or further medical assessment.
A consultation does not automatically result in a prescription. Prescribing decisions are made after an individual clinical assessment.

What Will the Doctor Ask About?

Blood pressure management involves more than looking at a single number. Your doctor may ask about:

  • Recent blood pressure readings
  • How and when your readings were taken
  • Current blood pressure medicines
  • Other prescription or over-the-counter medicines
  • Previous hypertension treatment
  • Heart or cardiovascular conditions
  • Kidney disease
  • Diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • Family history of high blood pressure or heart disease
  • Smoking or vaping
  • Alcohol intake
  • Diet and salt intake
  • Physical activity
  • Weight
  • Sleep apnoea or sleep problems
  • Pregnancy, where relevant
  • Any new or concerning symptoms

These factors help the doctor understand your overall situation and whether remote management is appropriate.

What Can Increase the Risk of High Blood Pressure?

There is not always one identifiable cause of hypertension. Several factors can increase the likelihood of developing high blood pressure.

These can include:

  • Family history of hypertension
  • Being overweight or living with obesity
  • Physical inactivity
  • A diet high in salt
  • Smoking
  • Higher alcohol intake
  • Diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • Increasing age

Some people develop secondary hypertension, where another condition contributes to high blood pressure. Possible causes can include kidney disease, narrowing of the arteries supplying the kidneys, hormonal disorders, sleep apnoea, pregnancy-related conditions and certain medicines.

This is one reason persistent high blood pressure should be medically assessed rather than managed solely based on home readings.

Pathology Referral

Existing Treatment vs Newly Elevated Blood Pressure

Already Taking Blood Pressure Medicine

If you have previously been diagnosed with hypertension, a telehealth consultation may help review recent readings, medicines, side effects and whether further monitoring or follow-up is needed.

Newly Elevated Readings

If you have not previously been diagnosed and your readings are repeatedly elevated, further assessment may be required before long-term treatment is started.

Your doctor may recommend home monitoring, pathology tests, an ECG, physical examination or assessment with your regular GP.

How Is High Blood Pressure Managed?

Lifestyle Measures

Depending on your circumstances, a doctor may discuss:

  • Regular physical activity
  • A balanced, heart-healthy diet
  • Reducing excess salt intake
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Stopping smoking or vaping
  • Limiting alcohol
  • Managing other cardiovascular risk factors

Lifestyle measures remain important even when medication is required.

Blood Pressure Medicines

Some people require antihypertensive medicine in addition to lifestyle changes. Common classes of blood pressure medicine include:

  • ACE inhibitors
  • Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs)
  • Calcium channel blockers
  • Diuretics
  • Beta blockers in selected circumstances

The appropriate medicine depends on factors such as age, other medical conditions, kidney function, current medicines, pregnancy status and previous treatment.

Some people require more than one medicine to control their blood pressure.

Do not start, stop or change the dose of prescribed blood pressure medicine without discussing it with a healthcare professional.
