Anaphylaxis

What is Anaphylaxis?

Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening allergy that shows severe symptoms within minutes or a few seconds of exposure to the allergen. Certain edibles such as peanuts, insect stings, and medications are the most common triggers of an anaphylactic reaction. In anaphylaxis, the body goes in shock due to exposure to the allergen present in certain food materials, pollens, stings, or medications. The immune system gets activated upon exposure to these materials and starts showing symptoms of anaphylaxis which may include a drop in blood pressure, breathing difficulty, skin rash, swelling, nausea, and vomiting. Anaphylactic shock can be deadly if not treated at once. Therefore, immediate medical help should be sought in case of anaphylaxis symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency that requires instant treatment. A severe allergic reaction must not be left on wait to see if the symptoms go away. Tell your doctor if you have a history of severe allergic reactions or have any known allergies.

Allergies can range from mild and moderate to severe and life-threatening. The symptoms of an allergic reaction are usually limited to skin conditions such as rash, redness, and itching. However, anaphylaxis symptoms cover multiple organs such as the lungs and heart.

Many agents or chemicals can trigger anaphylaxis but the most common causes are wasp and bee stings, tree nuts and peanuts, certain seafood and dairy products, certain plant materials and leaves, and some medications such as antibiotics. Note that the sources of an anaphylactic reaction are not limited to these agents only.

In case of an emergency, the source of causing allergy is removed first along with the management of severe symptoms. For this, IM or IV fluids (antidote) are administered and supportive care is provided to normalize breathing and circulation. For long-term treatment, you’ll need scheduled appointments with an immunologist or allergology expert.
